With 78.1% of Nepal’s demographic composition residing in rural areas, the agricultural sector is considered the backbone of the country’s economy, providing livelihoods to two-thirds of its population. Nevertheless, Nepalese farmers face a multitude of challenges such as catastrophic climatic conditions, insufficient yield beyond subsistence-level, a pronounced gender divide, and limited access to innovative agricultural technologies.

Responding to these challenges, PlantSat was founded in 2019 with a mission to improve Nepalese farmers’ resilience against sector-specific and climate-related risks, as well as to transform agriculture into a more sustainable, inclusive and empowering sector. The company’s Crop and Livestock Insurance plans offer digital solutions to expedite insurance processes, decreasing operational costs and protecting farmers’ yields and assets against unforeseen events. PlantSat leverages satellite-based monitoring and advanced AI technology to swiftly verify impacted lands and animal stock. Specifically, for livestock insurance, PlantSat utilizes muzzle pattern recognition to identify individual animals, ensuring accuracy in claim verification. Using data-driven solutions, PlantSat is revolutionizing the insurance landscape for the agricultural sector, ensuring a more trustworthy ecosystem by minimizing fraudulent claims, and enabling farmers with the right tool to make faster digital claims.

Additionally, PlantSat is advancing precision agriculture through their Satellite Farm Monitoring technology which enhances agricultural productivity and reduces the need for manual field visits and operational costs. Through high-resolution images and satellite-based analysis, PlantSat’s technology provides insights into crop health, water levels, nitrogen requirements, and anomality formation. It allows farmers access to expert advice for optimal resource management and preventive measures against crop destruction.

PlantSat harnesses cutting-edge technologies to enhance agricultural decision-making and risk management. GPS technology provides precise location data, enabling tailored interventions and support for specific farm plots. Weather analytics play a crucial role in weather pattern identification, offering timely insights that help farmers make informed decisions about planting, irrigation, and harvesting. Additionally, AI and machine learning employ advanced algorithms to predict crop yields, detect potential disease outbreaks, and optimize resource allocation. By integrating these technologies, PlantSat empowers farmers with data-driven insights, improving efficiency and resilience in agricultural practices. PlantSat delivers these insights through a web portal that allows farmers to monitor crops and livestock through remote satellite-based images, process and validate insurance claims, and verify documents and KYC identity through secure functions.

Since 2019, PlantSat has made significant strides in insuring over 6,700 farmers, covering over 1,130 hectares of land and providing over $2 million in total insurance coverage. However, given Nepal’s heavy reliance on agriculture, expanding its reach remains crucial to strengthening the sector’s resilience.

While other digital farming solutions in the region focus on precision agriculture and market access, PlantSat sets itself apart by integrating climate risk mitigation with AI-driven insurance verification. PlantSat continues to be committed to enhancing agricultural resilience in Nepal and its contribution has been recognized by local and international forums. The company aims to expand its services beyond Nepal, targeting other South Asian countries where farmers face similar challenges.
